General Information
This is the virtual course option with dates ranging from May 1, 2023 to May 30, 2024. Please Note - Testing is required in-person at an accredited testing center.
Playing outdoors is a major component in the health and wellness of our children. It is our responsibility to ensure safe, enjoyable play areas for all. CPRS, in conjunction with NRPA, are offering the Certified Playground Safety Inspector (CPSI) course and certification to properly train and certify you to recognize and prevent potential playground hazards. Courses are designed for park and rec staff, school districts, child care facilities, health departments, landscape architects, playground manufacturers, installers, contractors, insurance firms, home owner's associations and more.
Candidates who successfully pass the exam will be considered a Certified Playground Safety Inspector (CPSI) and will be added to the National Registry. Obtaining CPSI certification will meet the State of California requirements regarding the inspection of playgrounds. Recertification is required every three years.

Logistics for the Workshop
This 'blended learning' environment will include 12 hours of pre-recorded learning modules, a 4 hour virtual training course with a live instructor and an exam offered at a professional testing location.
Part 1 - Recorded Online Learning Modules
About one month prior to your selected course date, you will receive study materials via USPS as well as access to 12 hours of pre-recorded learning modules, presented by CPSI expert trainers. This study at your own pace 'Prep Course' will give you the basics to prepare for the Virtual Course and Exam.
Part 2 - LIVE Instruction via Zoom
All candidates must attend ONE 4 hour virtual course in order to sit for the exam. This course will be held via Zoom by a live instructor. There is a maximum of 45 students to allow for maximum interaction among students and instructor. Please choose the live Zoom course date that works best for you during the registration process by using the dropdown arrow on your date and choosing the "add" button.
Part 3 - CPSI Exam
NRPA will send you instructions to schedule your exam a few weeks before your course. Results will be shared with you following completion of the exam. Testing is required in person at a testing center near you.
Cancellations & Transfers
There are no cancellation refunds for online courses. Transfers to a new virtual course date must be made prior to your original virtual course date. All transfer requests received more than 30 days from your original virtual course date will incur a $100 fee to transfer to a later course date, if available. Transfer requests made less than 30 days from your original virtual course date will incur a $200 fee to transfer to a later course, if available. Transfers are only allowed one time. After the one-time transfer, you must register and pay for the course again. We cannot transfer virtual courses from person to person.
Other Details
You will receive an email confirmation and receipt after you register, sent to the email on file. Books will be mailed out to the address as listed on your registration approximately 30 days prior to the virtual course date. Please note, your information to access the online modules will also be provided approximately 30 days prior to your virtual course.
