General Information
Due to COVID-19, NRPA and CPRS are offering the training course virtually.
Playing outdoors is a major component in the health and wellness of our children. It is our responsibility to ensure safe, enjoyable play areas for all. CPRS, in conjunction with the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) are offering the Certified Playground Safety Inspector (CPSI) course and certification to properly train and certify you and your staff to recognize and prevent potential playground hazards. Courses are designed for park and recreation staff, school districts, child care facilities, health departments, landscape architects, playground manufacturers, installers, contractors, insurance firms, home owner's associations and more.
Candidates who successfully pass the exam will be considered a Certified Playground Safety Inspector (CPSI) and will be added to the National Registry. Obtaining CPSI certification will meet the State of California requirements regarding the inspection of playgrounds. Recertification is required every three years.
Registration
If you are new to our system and do
not have a login and password, you will need to add yourself and enter
your address & email. Do
not leave your addresses blank or we will not be able to send your
information to you. If someone is registering a group, please be sure
to include addresses and emails for the people you add so they will get
their information. Your books will be sent to the address you use & cannot be replaced unless they are returned as undeliverable.
Logistics for the Workshop
This 'blended learning' environment will include 12 hours of pre-recorded learning modules, a 4 hour virtual training course with a live instructor and a computer-based exam offered either at a professional testing site or online from your home. Online exam options have certain restrictions.

Part 1 - Online learning modules - study at your own pace
Once registered, you will receive study materials via USPS, as well as access to 12 hours of pre-recorded learning modules, presented by CPSI expert trainers. This 'Prep Course' will give you the basics you need to prepare for the Virtual Course and Exam, with the ability to study at your own pace.
Part 2 - LIVE Instruction via ZOOM
All candidates must attend ONE 4 hour virtual course in order to sit for the exam. This course will be held via ZOOM by a live instructor. There is a minimum of 20 students and a maximum of 45 students to allow for maximum interaction among students and instructor. We have multiple days to choose from; please choose the one date that works best for you during the registration process by using the dropdown arrow on your date and choosing the "add" button.
CPSI Exam time:
NRPA will send you instructions to schedule your exam after your registration has been processed. Results will be shared with you immediately following completion of the exam. After April 15, 2022, test will be required in person at a testing center nearest you.
Cancellations & Transfers
There are no cancellation refunds for online courses. Transfers to a new virtual course date must be made prior to your original virtual course date. All transfer requests received more than 30 days from your original virtual course date will incur a $100 fee to transfer to a later course date, if available. Transfer requests made less than 30 days from your original virtual course date will incur a $200 fee to transfer to a later course, if available. Transfers are only allowed one time. After the one-time transfer, you must register and pay for the course again. We cannot transfer courses from people to people.
Other Details
You will receive an email confirmation and receipt after you register, sent to the email on file. Books will be mailed out to the address as listed on your registration within two weeks of registering. Please verify your mailing address by clicking on the "Edit registrant information"link below.

A virtual course date (this is not your exam date) must be chosen during the registration process unless you are taking the exam only.

Our February 3rd virtual course registration is closed to allow for ample study time. Our next course is an in-person course in conjunction with the CPRS Connections Conference in Sacramento March 8-10, 2022 - Classes will be Tuesday & Wednesday with the exam on Thursday morning and includes entrance to the CPRS Expo that afternoon.
